SALT LAKE CITY — A motorcyclist is dead after being hit by a car, police confirmed Saturday.

The crash took place in the intersection of 400 West and 500 South and was first reported just after 10 a.m. Saturday.

Early information indicated a motorcyclist who was riding west ran a red light, Salt Lake Police Sgt. Jenn Diederich said. The male rider laid his motorcycle down, and a car heading north ran over him, she added.

The man was wearing a helmet, but died from injuries suffered in the crash, Diederich said. His age and other identifying information were not immediately released because police were still notifying his family members, she said.

The woman who drove the car remained at the scene and was cooperating with police, Diederich said. She did not suffer any injuries. Officials did not release additional information about the accident or driver.

Utah Department of Transportation officials reported on Twitter that 500 South was closed at 300 West as of 10:25 a.m. It had reopened by 2:15 p.m., according to dispatchers.

Editor's note: Dispatchers initially said the crash involved a car and a pedestrian, and took place at 300 W. 500 South. This story has been updated to reflect the correct information.
