SALT LAKE CITY — Amazon has started its process of hiring people for its new distribution center expected to open later this year.
The company has already begun accepting applications online, and the first of several in-person hiring events is slated for Wednesday at Vivint Arena, Lauren Lynch, an Amazon spokeswoman, wrote in an email. In all, the company anticipates to hire about 1,500 full-time employees for the facility located in the city’s northwest quadrant.
The tech retail giant officially announced the fulfillment center in July 2017, moving into a space west of Salt Lake International Airport located at 777 N. 5600 West. It received tax incentives from the Governor’s Office of Economic Development earlier in 2017 for its 855,000-square-foot facility.
Lynch said in a statement that the company is looking for associates that will work with Amazon Robotics to “pick, pack and ship customer items such as books, toys and small electronics.”
Amazon’s in-person hiring events will be held in Salt Lake daily for two weeks, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The first batch will be at Vivint Arena from Wednesday, Aug. 1 through Monday, Aug. 6; and at Hilton Salt Lake (255 S. West Temple) from Tuesday, Aug. 7 through Thursday, Aug. 16. Each day starts at 9 a.m. and ends at 4 p.m.

The governor's economic office estimated back in 2017 that the Amazon fulfillment facility would generate about $85.5 million in new wages and $28.4 million in new state tax revenue.
“This is an incredible ‘get’ for Salt Lake City and the state of Utah, and we couldn’t be more excited to host Amazon in this project," Salt Lake City Mayor Jackie Biskupski said after Amazon officially announced the fulfillment center.
Amazon’s fulfillment center job openings announcement came on the same day that The Guardian published a report alleging problems employees have had with workplace injuries and how they are handled.
It also cited the National Council of Occupational Safety and Health, which reported seven workers have been killed in workplace accidents since 2013, including three between September and October 2017.
A spokesperson for the company told the news outlet that workplace safety was the company’s top priority.
