HEBER CITY — A 46-year-old man suffered serious injuries after a concrete barrier collapsed on him during a demolition derby, officials said.
The man, who is from Salt Lake County, was working as an official during a demolition derby at the Wasatch County Fair about 9 p.m. Friday, Wasatch County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Jared Rigby said.
The man was standing just outside of the derby pit area when two vehicles collided in the pit, pushing one of the cars on top of a concrete barrier, Rigby said. The man started to move out of the way, but another vehicle hit the car that was on top of the barrier, causing the barrier to fall. The man was pinned under the barrier and the car, Rigby said.
He suffered serious "crush injuries" to his legs and was transported to Heber Valley Medical Center in an ambulance, Rigby said. He was in stable condition as of Saturday morning, but was still hospitalized and awaiting surgery.
Though the man’s injuries were serious, Rigby said the accident could have been worse.
“He’s lucky it didn’t get into the upper body,” he said.
