IDAHO FALLS, Idaho — Authorities said a traffic stop in Bonneville County on Tuesday led to the recovery of more than $24,000 in merchandise from three Cabela’s stores.

Robert L. Montgomery, of Buffalo, New York, and Janae R. Maxey, of Atlanta, Georgia, have each been charged with felony burglary, felony grand theft, felony possession of stolen property and misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance (marijuana), the Idaho State Journal reports. They have been booked into the Bonneville County jail.

Maxey was also charged with misdemeanor providing an officer with a false name.

According to the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy made a traffic stop on Montgomery and Maxey’s vehicle in the Love’s Travel Stop on S. 45th W. at approximately 2:30 p.m. Tuesday. When the deputy made contact with the pair, police said he noticed the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle.

When additional deputies arrived on scene, they discovered that Maxey and Montgomery, and their rental vehicle, matched the description of the suspects in a string of burglaries at three Cabela’s stores — including in Ammon, Farmington, Utah, and Lehi, Utah.

At each store, thousands of dollars of merchandise were stolen, and authorities said a large amount of it was located in Maxey and Montgomery’s vehicle.

Bonneville County sheriff’s deputies are continuing to investigate and work with other law enforcement agencies to determine where some of the recovered property was stolen from.

“It is believed that some of the recovered property may have been taken from other stores and detectives are researching other cases from around the region for possible connections,” the news release said.

Investigators estimate that $7,700 in merchandise was stolen from the Ammon Cabela’s store, while $8,800 and $8,000 in merchandise was stolen from the Farmington, Utah, and Lehi, Utah, stores, respectively.
