MIDVALE — A parole fugitive was arrested Monday morning in connection with a reported carjacking of a vehicle with two children inside Sunday, police said.

Charles Brandon Peterson, 39, was arrested on suspicion of kidnapping and vehicle theft, according to Unified Police Sgt. Melodie Gray.

Peterson was located near 200 West and 100 South in Salt Lake City about 8:30 a.m. shortly after police received a tip from someone who overheard Peterson talking in a Maverik gas station about being involved in the carjacking incident, Gray said.

Police had responded to a report of a man taking a vehicle that had stopped at a Harts gas station located at 335 W. 7200 South Sunday afternoon. A 13-year-old girl and her 4-month-old sister were in the back seat of the car while their mother went inside the gas station. Gray said the car wasn't running, but the keys were in the vehicle.

The man eventually stopped the vehicle at 6885 S. State St. and then fled on foot after the teen in the back seat, Josslyn Millam, called police and started screaming and hitting the man.

"It was horrifying. I was just scared that he was gonna hurt my baby sister and me. I was also pretty scared that my mom was gonna think I took her car. … But I'm just glad that we're safe," Millam told KSL on Sunday.

Gray said Peterson was taken to the Utah State Prison by Utah Adult Probation and Parole agents Monday morning.

Court records show Peterson pleaded guilty to theft by receiving stolen property, a second-degree felony, in 2014. He was sentenced to prison time in 2016 after a probation violation, according to court documents.
