SILVERTON, Colo. (AP) — A truck hauling waste from a Colorado mine where a massive spill three years ago polluted rivers has crashed into a creek. Authorities say the driver was not seriously injured in the crash Monday, but about 9 cubic yards of sludge spilled into the creek. The sludge is a byproduct of an Environmental Protection Agency treatment plant cleaning up water from the Gold King mine. The EPA has previously said the sludge isn't hazardous.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Utah militia group leader who pleaded guilty to trying to blow up a federal cabin in Arizona is being released on time served after spending two years in jail. Judge David Sam said Monday that 59-year-old William Keebler had been a model prisoner and noted his multiple physical ailments including prostate cancer and cardiac disease as reasons for not imprisoning him longer. Keebler appeared calm as his sentence was handed down in a federal courtroom in downtown Salt Lake City.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A moose has been released into the Utah wildness after spending several hours wandering around the University of Utah campus. University library spokeswoman Heidi Brett said the moose ate shrubs and meandered around a plaza adjacent to the library early Monday morning. Riley Peck, who is a wildlife manager for the state, says the young bull weighing around 800 pounds likely wandered down from the nearby mountains looking for new territory.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Many Salt Lake County government services are being suspended due to broken air conditioning in its central offices. Spokeswoman Michelle Schmitt said temperatures in some offices were as high as 100 degrees Monday because of a heat wave sweeping through the region. Schmitt says the malfunctioning system was caused by a power outage Sunday night and early Monday morning. Other county services not at central offices remain open, including libraries and health centers.
