SOUTH SALT LAKE — Several cars caught on fire at a South Salt Lake wrecking yard on Saturday afternoon, creating a plume of black smoke that was visible for miles across the valley.

Between eight and 10 vehicles caught fire about 1:10 p.m. at the yard near the intersection of 500 West and 3460 South, according to South Salt Lake Fire Chief Terry Addison.

The cars were near a maintenance shop that is attached to the yard, but it was not clear how the fire started, Addison said.

Crews were still trying to put out the fire as of 2 p.m.; the wind was making the firefight more difficult, Addison said. There were no injuries in the fire, which has been contained to the wrecking yard.
