HUNTINGTON, Emery County — The Trail Mountain fire in Emery County has scorched 13,710 acres but is now 40 percent contained, officials said in a Sunday night update.
The fire, which started on June 6 after a prescribed fire escaped, has 595 firefighters, eight helicopters and 23 engines assigned to it. Utah fire officials contributed the productive day to Saturday night rain showers and lower temperatures throughout Sunday.
Firefighters working to complete the containment line near a power plant in Meetinghouse Canyon are coordinating with utility companies to make sure there is no water contamination from sediment, according to the update.
"Some sections of the fire are entering the mop up phase, and firefighters will be putting out lingering heat, clearing, and rehabilitating roads," officials said.
The Manti-La Sal National Forest has an area closure in effect around the fire and the map can be viewed on inciweb.nwcg.gov.
Firefighters assigned to the fire sent Father's Day messages to their families on Emery County Sheriff's Facebook page.
