WEST VALLEY CITY— A man charged in connection with a stabbing in Millcreek April 20 was apprehended after a SWAT standoff ended peacefully Wednesday night, police said.

Ezra “Risky” Hernandez, 28, surrendered to SWAT officers about 7:40 p.m. after Metro Gang Unit officers tracked him to a home at 3185 S. 4060 West in West Valley City, Unified police said on Twitter. Hernandez barricaded himself from police for at least two hours, according to Unified police.

He was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail Tuesday night. Hernandez was also charged with aggravated assault, a second-degree felony, in 3rd District Court April 30, according to court records. The charges stemmed from an April 20 stabbing that left a man seriously injured.

Police responded to a report of the stabbing at the Dominguez Park Apartments, 3970 S. 700 West, about 5:30 a.m. that day. Hernandez and a 24-year-old man were arguing and the argument led to a fight, according to a police affidavit.

During that fight, the 24-year-old man told police he “felt his arm go ‘dead’ and realized he had been stabbed,” the report stated. Hernandez then fled the apartment complex and the injured man was taken to a hospital.

The man who was stabbed suffered a punctured lung and stab wounds to his chest and one of his arms, Unified Police Lt. Brian Lohrke said on April 20.

No initial court appearance date had been set for Hernandez as of Thursday morning. Court records show he has a lengthy criminal history in Utah.
