MILLCREEK — One person is dead after a vehicle crashed into a power pole near the intersection of 900 E. 3300 South on Thursday afternoon, officials said.

Speed was a factor in the single-vehicle crash, Unified police detective Ken Hansen said.

The driver, later identified as 22-year-old Ibrahim Yassin, was declared dead at the scene, according to police. The 22-year-old female passenger was transported to a hospital in critical condition, but was later upgraded to serious but stable condition, police said.

Witnesses at the scene told police the car appeared to weave in between lanes and then lose control, Hansen said. The car also rolled partially before hitting the pole, he said.

The vehicle also might have caught fire after the crash, Unified fire officials said.

Eastbound and westbound lanes of 3300 South were closed as of 4:45 p.m., Utah Department of Transportation officials said on Twitter. The lanes will be closed until about 9:00 p.m., UDOT officials estimated.

Utility crews were on their way to the scene as of 5:30 p.m. to fix the broken power pole, according to Hansen, and would take hours to fix.

Hansen said one electrical circuit was broken, but he was not sure if there were any power outages in the area.

Hansen added it was too soon to tell if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash. He also said it was not clear if weather conditions were a factor.

Editor's note: Police initially said the female passenger had died from her injuries at the hospital, but later said she was in serious condition. This story has been edited to reflect that change.
