BALTIMORE (AP) — G.G. Smith has resigned as head men's basketball coach at Loyola University Maryland, after a rocky five-year run.
The Greyhounds went 56-98 under his guidance, never finishing above .500. Loyola was 9-22 this season, including 1-16 on the road.
Smith joined the Loyola staff as an assistant coach under Jimmy Patsos before the 2007-2008 season and was named the 20th head coach of the Greyhounds in April 2013. He is the son of Tubby Smith, who's currently coaching Memphis following head coaching stints at several schools, most notably Kentucky.
In the wake of his departure Thursday, G.G. Smith said: "While we did not achieve the results we wanted on the court, I am proud of our players' academic and community accomplishments."
Donna M. Woodruff, Loyola's assistant vice president and director of athletics, will oversee the search for Smith's successor.
