SALT LAKE CITY — A man who barricaded himself inside a residence and made violent threats Sunday morning is in police custody.

About 9:15 a.m., police received a report of a domestic situation near 800 W. Fremont St., according to Salt Lake police detective Greg Wilking. A man involved in the incident fled from the residence and then barricaded himself inside his own residence near 1500 W. Hayes Ave.

The man — later identified by police as 31-year-old Darin Ackman — made threats that he had a weapon and would use it against other people, deeming him a danger to residents and police in the area, Wilking said.

Police and a SWAT team set up a containment area and attempted to make contact with Ackman. Ackman did not respond to authorities during that time so they introduced a tear gas substance into his home, which resulted in him peacefully exiting the residence, Wilking said.

No other people were in the home with Ackman.

Police said Ackman had outstanding warrants, but did not specify what the charges were.

Ackman will be booked into the Salt Lake County Jail.
