Mayes, Williams help Florida A&M beat South Carolina State

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Elijah Mayes scored a career-high 25 points, Desmond Williams added 24 points and a career-high 15 rebounds and Florida A&M beat South Carolina State 76-74 on Monday night.

Mayes was 9-of-15 shooting while Williams made 6 of 11 from the field and hit all 12 of his free-throw attempts. Marcus Barham added 20 points for FAMU (8-23, 7-8 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference).

South Carolina State (10-20, 6-9) made four more (27) field goals than the Rattlers, but was outscored 26-18 from the free-throw line, where FAMU shot 81.3 percent.

Damani Applewhite had 16 points and eight rebounds, while Janai Raynor Powell scored 15 and grabbed nine boards, for the Bulldogs. Patrell Rogers added 14 points.

The Rattlers are tied with Morgan State for seventh in the conference standings — one game behind North Carolina Central. South Carolina State fell into an eighth-place tie with Howard.
