SOUTH SALT LAKE — A teenager injured in a shooting Tuesday afternoon died from his injuries early Wednesday morning, police said.

The 16-year-old boy, identified as Alan Hernandez-Lopez, was pronounced dead at a hospital shortly after midnight, according to South Salt Lake police detective Gary Keller.

A GoFundMe page* was set up Wednesday to pay for funeral expenses.

"Alan was a loving and sweet boy. He helped at home as much as he could, taking care of his siblings and working part-time to assist his mother," according to a post on the site. "This speaks to the person Alan was, always putting his family and loved ones first."

Hernandez-Lopez was a 10th-grader at an alternative school in the Granite School District, according to district spokesman Ben Horsley.

He was shot while standing near a sidewalk in the area of 300 East and 3100 South around 4 p.m. Tuesday, Keller said. Police are trying to determine who the shooter was and whether the shooter was in a vehicle at the time of the incident.

Anyone who may have any information about the case is encouraged to call South Salt Lake Police Dispatch at 801-840-4000.
