GAINESVIILE, Va. (AP) — Police in northern Virginia have found the driver of an SUV who they say ran off and left one of his passengers for dead after an accident.

Prince William County Police say the crash occurred before 3 a.m. Monday on U.S. 15 in Gainesville.

Police say the driver of a 2001 Toyota 4-Runner lost control and crashed his vehicle, which rolled. According to police, the driver then fled the scene.

A man in the backseat, 38-year-old Jose Nelvin Romero Maldanado, was thrown from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. A front seat passenger suffered minor injuries.

Police used dogs and helicopter to search for the driver. Police said Monday afternoon he'd been located by deputies in neighboring Fauquier County and would be questioned about the accident.
