SALT LAKE CITY — Police arrested five people and seized more than 100 balloons filled with heroin as part of the ongoing Operation Rio Grande enforcement efforts.

From Jan. 16-18, undercover officers from the Department of Public Safety’s State Bureau of Investigation went around the Salt Lake Valley making drug buys, according to spokeswoman Marissa Cote. The operation resulted in the recovery of more than 100 heroin balloons and 50 balloons filled with crack cocaine, she said.

Five people were taken into custody. Cote said the group is believed to be part of a Honduran drug trafficking organization that has been distributing drugs throughout the Salt Lake Valley.

Four of the five were previously deported for drug trafficking, and three had current warrants for their arrests for drug-related charges, Cote said. All five are Honduran nationals and in the country illegally, she said.

Information on the group was gathered while law enforcers continued their efforts in the Rio Grande area.

Additional information will be posted as it becomes available.
