TAYLORSVILLE — A man was critically injured after taking a freeway exit too quickly and rolling his truck Monday evening, according to Utah Highway Patrol officials.

The driver of a Dodge Ram truck was heading north on I-215 at what Highway Patrol officials called "a high rate of speed," at about 7:10 p.m. When he tried to exit at 4700 South, his vehicle was traveling too quickly for the ramp and he lost control, according to a written statement from the UHP. The truck drove off the right side of the road, hit the sound wall, rolled twice and stopped upright.

The driver was thrown into the back seat of the truck and "partially ejected out the rear window," the statement said. The driver appeared to have been wearing his seat belt incorrectly, officials said. He was critically injured and taken to the Intermountain Medical Center.

The offramp was closed for about an hour and a half after the accident.

Troopers used Monday night's rollover to emphasize the need for abiding speed laws and correctly wearing seat belts.

"Troopers want to remind all drivers that the posted speed limit is the safest maximum speed and that properly wearing a seat belt could save your life or prevent serious injury," the UHP statement said. "Properly wearing a seat belt means it should be snugly buckled across the lower hips (or) upper thighs with the shoulder portion across the sternum and collar bone. Tucking the shoulder belt under an armpit or behind the back is never proper and is unsafe."
