SALT LAKE CITY — The former director of Salt Lake City's 911 Dispatch Center was charged Tuesday in a DUI case that cost him his job.
Prosecutors in Davis County Justice Court on Tuesday charged Scott D. Freitag with driving under the influence, having an open container in his car and possession of a firearm by an intoxicated person, all misdemeanors.
Freitag did not have a publicly listed attorney.
Also a Layton city councilman, Freitag was arrested by Centerville police last week.
Freitag was driving a Salt Lake City Corp. vehicle with exempt plates when a Centerville officer noticed he was driving erratically on I-15 about 1:30 p.m. on Jan. 3, police said. An officer pulled him over at a rest stop in Kaysville and he was cooperative.
Freitag's blood alcohol content was more than 2 ½ times the legal limit — at .214 percent — according to an Intoxilyzer machine reading, Centerville Assistant Police Chief Von Steenblik said shortly after the arrest.
"I made a mistake. I'm dealing with the consequences," Freitag told KSL on Jan. 4.
Freitag formerly was the spokesman for the Salt Lake City Fire Department. He was head of Salt Lake City's 911 Emergency Dispatch until Thursday, when Mayor Jackie Biskupski said he had been fired.
Freitag was appointed director of Salt Lake's 911 in May 2012 and reappointed in July 2016.
