Green Bay beats Detroit Mercy 95-83 in Horizon League opener

ASHWAUBENON, Wis. (AP) — Sandy Cohen III tossed in 24 points to lead five players in double figures and Green Bay rolled to a 95-83 victory over Detroit Mercy in a Horizon League opener on Thursday night.

Khalil Small finished with 17 points, eight rebounds and six assists for the Phoenix (6-8), while reserve Sukhjot Bains scored a career-high 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting with six boards. PJ Pipes scored 13 and David Jesperson added 11 points and six rebounds.

Jermaine Jackson Jr. knocked down a career-best seven 3-pointers and scored 25 with six rebounds and five assists for the Titans (4-10), while Kameron Chatman finished with 22 points, 11 rebounds and five assists. Reserve Tariiq Jones chipped in with a career-high 13 points and five boards for Detroit Mercy, which dropped its eighth straight game and lost for the ninth time in the last 10 games against the Phoenix.

The Titans trailed 48-41 at halftime, but Jones' 3-point play evened the score at 67 midway through the second half. Jackson's 3-pointer with 7:02 left again pulled Detroit Mercy even at 73. But Jesperson answered with a 3 of his own, Small added three free throws and Cohen had a dunk and a 3 in a 12-1 spurt to give Green Bay an 85-74 lead with four minutes remaining.
