SALT LAKE CITY — Police were looking Wednesday for two people who hit a man with their vehicle, temporarily pinning him.

The 24-year-old victim was taken to a local hospital to be treated for broken ribs and other injuries not considered to be life-threatening, said Salt Lake police detective Richard Chipping.

The incident began about 10 p.m. Tuesday near 600 South and 400 East as a fight between two people. At one point, one of the people fighting got into a Jeep Liberty driven by a third person and, according to witnesses, intentionally hit the other man who was fighting, Chipping said.

After pinning the man, the Jeep backed up and drove off, going over a curb and hitting a support cable to a power pole along the way, said Salt Lake Police Lt. Scott Smalley.

The Jeep was found abandoned about a half-block away. The Jeep was parked near the listed residence of the registered owner. But detectives were still trying to determine Wednesday whether the owner was the person driving the vehicle Tuesday night, Chipping said.

The Jeep was seized by detectives to be processed for evidence. Investigators were also still trying to determine how the fight started and what the relation is between the victim and his assailants.
