WEST VALLEY CITY — State Route 201 reopened Tuesday afternoon after it was briefly closed when a container holding formic acid fell out of a UPS delivery truck earlier in the day.
Emergency crews responded to a report of a hazmat situation after a container holding approximately 5 liters of formic acid fell out of the delivery truck heading east on S.R. 201 about 11 a.m., Utah Highway Patrol Lt. Todd Royce said.
Royce said the latch of the delivery truck was loose and had opened, allowing the container to fall out of the truck. West Valley Fire Department's hazardous materials response team responded to clean up the spill and neutralize the acidity.
"This formic acid is kind of a scientific-grade acid so it can be potentially dangerous stuff, but seeing how it was in a small amount, it just took time to neutralize it, and it appears the road surface isn't going to be affected by it," Royce said.
The cleanup closed eastbound lanes of S.R. 201 at Redwood Road and westbound lanes at 900 West for a little more than an hour, but the entire freeway reopened around 12:15 p.m.
It was undetermined if the driver would face any citations, Royce added.
