(KSL News) -- A motorcyclist is in critical condition this morning after he abandoned his bike to avoid a collision.

Sheriff's deputies on the scene say the 27-year-old man wasn't wearing a helmet and may have been traveling at an excessive speed through a residential area near 3000 South 8000 West.

Deputies say a car pulled out of a driveway, and before the rider hit the vehicle, he abandoned his bike.

Dep. Bruce Sterner, Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office: "It appears the motorcyclist anticipated the collision, and that's when he dropped his bike to the ground."

The driver was flown to the hospital with major head injuries.
