SANDY — A family who believed they were about to fall victim to a home invasion is now calling for serious consequences for a "prank" they say went too far.

Jennifer Green said her teenage daughter had just come home at about 11:45 p.m. Friday night, when the family heard what sounded like two gunshots coming from the front doorstep of the house that sits along Altawood Drive in Sandy.

“Our door just swings open and my daughter goes flying across the couch because she’s, like, terrified,” Green said.

It turned out that their door had been kicked in by two people captured on surveillance video, who are then seen running back toward a dark-colored SUV that had previously been spotted turning around in the family’s driveway a minute earlier.

“You can just hear them laughing because they thought it was funny,” Green said. “How can you bash in a door with all these Christmas decorations everywhere? Like, it’s just not OK.”

Green said she believed her house may have been intentionally targeted by teens, but she is awaiting further conclusions from a police investigation.

Sandy Police Lt. Dean Carriger said Monday afternoon that officers were still looking into the matter, which they consider to be a criminal mischief type case.

Green said the door and door frame will likely have to be replaced, and she said the cost could be in the range of $5,000.

She encouraged anyone with information about the incident or the suspects spotted on surveillance video to call Sandy Police at 801-799-3000.

“We haven’t been able to eat, we haven’t been able to sleep,” Green said. “We feel very nervous and violated.”
