MIDVALE — Three people were taken into custody following a brief standoff with a SWAT team at a Midvale hotel.

The incident began early Wednesday when a car was stolen in the Cottonwood Heights area, said Cottonwood Heights Police Sgt. Ryan Shosted. A gun and credit cards had been inside the car, he said.

Detectives were able to track the suspects as they used the credit cards, and police also obtained surveillance video, Shosted said. Police eventually tracked the trio to a motel near 280 West and 7200 South.

When officers knocked on the hotel room door, they saw through the window what appeared to be a gun pointed at them, Shosted said. The officers backed off and called for backup, including a Unified police SWAT team. Surrounding motel rooms were evacuated.

After about 20 minutes of negotiation, two women and a man, believed to be in their 40s, came out of the room about 12:30 p.m. and surrendered, he said.

Additional information will be posted as it becomes available.
