SALT LAKE CITY — Formal charges were filed Wednesday against a man who prosecutors say stabbed a Maverik employee in the neck and bit a police officer three times.
Edwin Ogando, 33, of Salt Lake City, is charged in 3rd District Court with aggravated assault, a second-degree felony; assault by a prisoner, a third-degree felony; assault on a police officer, a class A misdemeanor; and interfering with an arresting officer, a class B misdemeanor.
On Oct. 9, a 39-year-old Maverik clerk noticed Ogando acting "strange" in the parking lot before he even entered the store, 3112 S. Redwood Road. Worried that something was up, the woman began putting money in the store's safe, charging documents state.
When Ogando entered the store, police say he told the clerk to call 911. After asking him what was wrong, Ogando jumped over the counter, grabbed the woman by the neck and held a knife to her, the charges state.

A man who recently got out of jail for threatening a Maverik store employee with a knife was arrested early Monday after police say he went to another Maverik and stabbed an employee in the neck.Ogando stabbed her in the cheek, abdomen and leg, causing a "deep gash that is likely to leave a permanent scar on her face," according to the charges.
Two delivery men who were in the store helped the clerk escape, and then held Ogando in a back room until police arrived.
When West Valley police arrived and tried to take the man into custody, he bit an officer's thigh, and later bit the same officer's forearm twice after he was taken to a local hospital, the charges state.
In May, Ogando was arrested after police said he did something similar at a Maverik at 414 W. 500 South. In that incident, he damaged store property, threatened the store clerk by swinging a knife around, and then cut himself, according to police.
He was convicted in that case and sentenced on Sept. 8 to 150 days in jail. Due to a clerical error, however, he was released from jail the next day and was not rearrested until after the stabbing on Monday.
