Elder Andersen: Prepare, listen to and learn from conference addresses

Elder Neil L. Andersen, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, closed the conference by reminding church members of the importance of listening to the words spoken in LDS general conferences and following them.

And while the ideas for some of the church leaders’ messages come to them quickly, others do not know what their message will be until right before the conference in which he or she is assigned to speak, he said. Regardless of how the inspiration comes, the “content and details (of the messages) require enormous spiritual climbing,” Elder Andersen said. Church leaders spend a lot of time in fasting and prayer to get the message just right, he said. To the church members, Elder Andersen said: “I promise you that as you prepare your spirit, and come with anticipation, that you will hear the voice of the Lord. Thoughts and feelings will come into your mind that are customized especially for you.” He concluded with his testimony that “we have heard the voice of the Lord” in this conference, and he encouraged church members to deeply study the general conference messages.

Elder Alonso: Love through service gives us strength

Elder Jose J. Alonso of the Seventy began his talk by saying that “love is a feeling of deep devotion, concern and affection” and that the “greatest example of God’s love for his children is found in the infinite Atonement of Jesus Christ.” Through love, and the example of Jesus Christ, all may learn how to combat the challenges found in the struggles of life. He said that love is a “combination of actions, as well as deep feelings.” One can love someone by simply having feelings toward another, but it is through service — or action — that true love is made clear. He urged those in attendance to not just send an emoji or picture sharing their love. Instead, he suggested leaving mobile devices behind and using “our hands and feet to help others in great need.” “Love without service is like faith without works,” Elder Alonso said. Elder Alonso spent the remainder of his talk telling the story of a family he knew that suffered great emotional pain after losing their young son. The boy was running across the street when a passing vehicle struck the boy. He eventually died from his injuries. Quoting boy’s father, Elder Alonso said he asked his Heavenly Father “in the name of the Savior” to “take away my grief, and he did.” Almost immediately, Elder Alonso said the family turned their attention to the driver of the vehicle. The family eventually met with the driver and his family. The boy's father and the driver of the vehicle embraced in a “great big hug.” “We were together what seemed to be a long time. We told him we knew that what had happened was the definition of an accident.” He added that it was “miraculous” that the family could feel that way despite suffering their own pain.

Elder Arden: Nourishing your spiritual roots

Elder Ian S. Arden of the Seventy said this is a day in which misinformation about LDS beliefs is rampant and can eat away at spiritual roots. "Failure to protect these spiritual roots" will invite in those who seek to destroy the faith of the believers, he said. Members of the church must be vigilant in fortifying themselves spiritually against opposition, he said. They can do this by faithful Sabbath day observance, increased temple visits and family history work, personal and family prayer daily and scripture study. Despite doing all these things, some may still have doubts and questions.

Elder Parrella teaches about Joseph Smith’s first vision

Elder Adilson de Paula Parrella of the Seventy, taught about some of the restored truths that can be learned from the prophet Joseph Smith’s First Vision of God the Father and his son Jesus Christ in 1820. Elder Parrella said the first lesson from the First Vision is that God still calls prophets today, even as he did anciently. These prophets warn and guide God’s children, and have the authority to speak in the name of God. Those who follow the words of the prophets will be protected and will receive rich blessings, he said.

Believers can worship a God who is real and whom they can understand. Elder Parella also taught about the critical mission of the Atonement of Christ. Because Christ came to earth, suffered, died on the cross and was resurrected, each of God’s children now has the chance to be resurrected, he said. Christ conquered death so each could live again. He made it possible for people to repent of their sins when they make mistakes.

Elder Ellis teaches about trusting in God

Elder Stanley G. Ellis, emeritus member of the Quorum of the Seventy, spoke of the relationship of trust the children of God have with him, and the need for hard struggles in life to create and cement that trust. “Hard makes us stronger, humbles us, gives us a chance to prove ourselves,” Elder Ellis said. He gave several examples of trials and challenges others have faced that helped build their faith and trust in the Lord: — The late 19th century Mormon pioneers’ struggle to travel across the United States from Illinois to the Salt Lake Valley. — The Book of Mormon prophet Nephi’s struggles to see his family safely to the Promised Land. — God the Father’s sacrifice of his Only Begotten Son.

If the bird receives help with this arduous task, it actually becomes a weaker creature. “Hard is the constant,” Elder Ellis said. “We all have challenges; the variable is our reaction to the hard.” Different things are hard for different people, he said, but hard can be good for those who will move forward with faith and trust the Lord and his plan. “We can have the faith to trust (the Lord),” Elder Ellis said. “He wants what is best for us. Elder Koch teaches that despite differences, all should be one

Elder Joni L. Koch of the Seventy began his talk by relating a story of returning home from work to watch a Brazilian soccer game. On his way home, he said, he drove past a man in a wheelchair decorated with the Brazilian flag. Elder Koch said he knew both would soon be watching the same soccer game, and felt “strongly united with that man.” The experience, he said, is still something he can remember vividly, again feeling the emotions of unity and recalling that the “love of our country made us feel like one in that very moment.” Elder Koch said all church members should feel like they are one with each other. “In the church, in spite of our differences, the Lord expects us to be one,” he said.

— The LDS Church (@LDSchurch) October 1, 2017 Elder Koch said all members of the church should leave behind their racial, social, political, academic, professional and other differences, and "concentrate on our spiritual objectives.” He added that by standing together collectively in one purpose, it creates a “strong sense of oneness.” But when individuals act to demean or criticize other members of the church, it will “erode love, trust and the goodwill that should exist among us.” Elder Koch illustrated this by sharing the story of Symonds Ryder, an early convert to the church. Following a published revelation by then-President Joseph Smith that misspelled Ryder’s name, Ryder turned to criticizing Joseph Smith and eventually led a group in persecuting the church’s founder. “We have no right to portray anybody, especially from our church circle, as a badly-finished product,” Elder Koch said. “Rather, our words about our fellow beings should reflect our belief in Jesus Christ and his Atonement, and that in him and through him, we can always change for the better. “As we decide to be one with the members and leaders of the church, both when we’re assembled together but especially when we’re apart, we will feel more perfectly unified with our Heavenly Father and the Savior.” — Josh Furlong

Brother Callister: Is the Book of Mormon from God or man?

He laid out many arguments from critics who have claimed Joseph Smith wrote the Book of Mormon himself, and not through revelation. Critics suppose Joseph Smith was a creative genius who used many books from his time to put together the Book of Mormon — although not one solitary witness claims to have seen Joseph Smith with these books, Brother Callister said. He asked, how would Joseph Smith have read these books and then dictate, by perfect memory, a book full of divine doctrine?

Elder Ballard encourages faith in every footstep

Elder M. Russell Ballard of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles spoke of the church’s rich pioneer ancestry and the sacrifices pioneers made to travel to what is now Utah. He said that even though many of them had different backgrounds and came from different places, they each had a testimony of Jesus Christ to help them be united. Their faith in Christ helped them to keep going forward and overcome the many difficulties they faced on their journey. We are not so different from those pioneers, Elder Ballard said. Each has a journey they are on, and must also rely on faith to get there. Each must each ask: Where is my final destination? Are my footsteps leading me to that eternal reward that God has promised, or am I going down a path that takes me away from that reward?

President Eyring: Standing on the rock of a testimony of Jesus Christ

President Eyring, first counselor in the First Presidency, recalled a challenge church President Thomas S. Monson gave to members of the LDS Church in April. He asked members to “immerse themselves in the Book of Mormon.” President Eyring said by following this counsel, he has since felt the Spirit more and “found greater power to resist temptation and felt greater faith in Jesus.” He then talked about how this helped drive out doubt and fear, and gave him a spirit of optimism even as commotion in the world seemed to increase. A testimony of Jesus Christ gives people an increased desire to go out and help others in need. Courage to do what the Lord asks each to do comes from faith in Jesus Christ, he said, and the Lord has promised to help.

President Eyring has seen that unwavering desire to help others in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma in Florida, Puerto Rico and St. Thomas. This is the miracle of faith driving out fear. One couple President Eyring met in Florida, who were not members of the LDS Church, left their devastated property to help clean out other houses. They prayed that they would receive help with their damaged property after they were done helping others. The husband felt strongly that help would come. A few hours later, LDS volunteers wearing yellow “Mormon Helping Hands” shirts showed up to help clear fallen trees from their driveway. Another Florida resident was feeling overwhelmed and overheated while working alone in her devastated yard, when a group of LDS volunteers arrived to help. Close to tears, she said these volunteers were a pure miracle, working hard with smiles and diligence, wanting nothing in return.

Elder Zwick: Look beyond and see others as Christ does

Elder W. Craig Zwick, emeritus member of the Seventy, started his talk with a reference to the movie "Lion King." He recalled the advice given to the new king, which was to “look beyond what you see,” and said that the gospel of Jesus Christ also encourages people to look beyond what they can see. To do that, each listening must see others through the eyes of the Savior, he said.

It is vital to widen the tiny lens of one's own experience and seek to better understand another person’s situation.

One of the missionaries wanted to go home, but Elder Zwick decided he was going to work with the missionary and encourage him to stay. He tried several different ways to help the missionary, but nothing seemed to help. It wasn’t until Elder Zwick asked him what was so hard that the missionary finally told him that he couldn’t read. Elder Zwick said he had jumped to conclusions and tried giving solutions before fully understanding the problem. The missionary ultimately learned to read and continued to be a great disciple of Christ, Elder Zwick said. — Devon Dewey

Bishop Waddell discusses how one should respond when in response to unexpected plans

Bishop W. Christopher Waddell, second counselor in the Presiding Bishopric, spoke about how each should respond to unexpected plans. He opened with a story about how a family trip to Hawaii was altered after their 4-month-old child was diagnosed with a double ear infection. He then turned to the story of Hyrum Shumway, who was blinded after battle in World War II. Shumway's blindness ended his dream of becoming a doctor, but he later got married, had eight children and served for 30 years as a director of deaf and blind students, adjusting his path without wavering.

“We cannot control all that happens to us but we have absolute control over how we respond to the changes in our lives,” Waddell said. “This does not imply that the challenges and trials we face are of no consequence and easily handled or dealt with. It does not imply that we will be free from pain or heartache.” Waddell concluded by saying these unforeseen events, such as recent natural disasters, as well as any sort of personal disaster one could deal with, are good reminders to focus on the Jesus Christ and his teachings. “Whatever change in life’s circumstance may come our way, and whatever unexpected path we may have to travel, how we respond is a choice. Turning to the Savior and grasping his outstretched arm is always our best option.”

Elder Bednar: Partakers of the divine nature

Elder David A. Bednar of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles talked about how observing the Sabbath day, or Sundays, and visiting temples are vitally connected in helping individuals and families partake of “the divine nature” in their lives, most importantly in their homes. “One of the great challenges each of us faces every day is to not allow the concerns of this world to so dominate our time and energy that we neglect the eternal things that matter most,” Elder Bednar began his talk by saying. “We can be too easily diverted from remembering and focusing upon the essential spiritual priorities because of our many responsibilities and busy schedules.” He said that too often the priorities of life block individuals from fully receiving God’s promises intended for his children; that “we try to run so fast that we may forget where we are going.”

— The LDS Church (@LDSchurch) October 1, 2017 Elder Bednar said securing the promises God has planned for his children comes by living the doctrines of the gospel, and by following the individual commandments he has set in place for his children to receive his divine blessings. He added that observing the Sabbath day and attending the temple are two vital sources of divine help to overcome the corruption of the world. He urged those in attendance to not see the Sabbath day and attending the temple as two distinct ways to gain divine help, but to see them as working together to “strengthen us spiritually as individuals and in our homes.” He added that the two work together to “elevate our vision” from that of the corruption of the world, to that of what God wants for his children. Elder Bednar said the two — observing the Sabbath day and attending the temple — can be the “ultimate combination” to help individuals in their homes. “Leaving our homes to spend time in Sunday meetings and to enter the sacred space of a temple is vital but insufficient,” he said. “Only as we bring the spirit and strength derived from these holy activities back with us into our homes can we sustain our focus upon the great purposes of mortal life, and overcome the corruption that is in the world. “What we do in our homes with his sacred time and with what we learn in his sacred space is pivotal to becoming partakers of the divine nature.”

Elder Hallstrom: What is a miracle?

Elder Donald L. Hallstrom of the Seventy spoke on what constitutes a miracle. He told the story of Clark Fales, a member of the church who climbed Mt. Shasta with his high adventure scouting group. Clark was one of the first people in his group to reach the peak at over 14,000 feet. After a brief rest, Clark stood up and began to walk down, but he tripped and fell backward over a cliff, Elder Hallstrom said. Clark was in a free fall for 40 feet and then tumbled down a 300-foot icy slope. He remarkably survived the fall, Elder Hallstrom said. Elder Hallstrom then began to list the miracles that immediately happened that helped Clark get help: First to reach him was a group of hikers that included seasoned mountain rescue guides and medical professionals, who treated him for shock. The group had a new communication device that allowed them to radio for a helicopter. The helicopter was ultimately able to land after a third attempt. Clark was airlifted to a hospital where a renouned trauma surgeon, who rarely visited that hospital, was waiting. That surgeon said he had never seen anyone survive with that much damage to the spine. “Describing himself as agnostic”, the surgeon said that Clark’s recovery went against all his scientific knowledge and "can only be described as a miracle.” Elder Hallstrom met with the Fales family, and felt strongly that the family of seven would have spiritually survived whatever that outcome was the day that Clark fell, because of their great faith and trust in the Lord. Sister Bingham encourages each to come unto Jesus

Sister Jean B. Bingham, Relief Society general president, reflected on many recent disasters that have rocked the nation and the world. She said it seems the whole earth is in commotion, with millions of people displaced by earthquakes, floods and conflict, their lives in turmoil. Looking at all this chaos, she asked this question: How do I find joy despite the difficulties of life? The answer? Lasting joy is found by focusing on the Savior Jesus Christ and living his gospel, she said. The more each person emulates the life of Christ, the more they understand that he is the source of peace, healing and progress.

She said it also helps to understand that Christ is the source of healing, but that each must come unto him to receive that healing. President Eyring: Priesthood fundamentals

President Henry B. Eyring, first counselor in the First Presidency, spoke about how Jesus Christ leads his kingdom on earth. LDS faithful believe the church is led through priesthood authority, given to worthy men in the LDS faith. The priesthood power, or power of God, was restored under church founder and prophet Joseph Smith, according to LDS beliefs. President Eyring listed four fundamentals of this priesthood leadership: 1. Jesus is the head of the church 2. Jesus leads his church today by speaking to men called prophets, and does it through revelation 3. He gave revelation to prophets long ago, still does and will continue to do so 4. He gives confirming revelation to those who serve under prophets “From those fundamentals, we recognize the Lord’s leadership of the church requires great and steady faith,” President Eyring said.

Elder Maynes: Integrity of our hearts

Elder Richard J. Maynes of the Seventy talked to the older men — husbands and fathers — in the congregation about the great importance of gaining the trust of a Heavenly Father. He said “there is no greater compliment we could receive from the Lord than to know that he trusts us to be worthy priesthood holders and great husbands and fathers.” Elder Maynes said trust from a Heavenly Father comes through “effort on our part” and by “obedience to God’s laws.” He added that when an individual keeps his promises — obedience to God’s laws — that individual gains more trust in the eyes of God. “Being a man of integrity simply means your intentions, as well as your actions, are pure and righteous in all aspects of your life — both in public and in private,” Elder Maynes said. “With each decision we make we either merit more of God’s trust or diminish his trust.” Elder Maynes said that the church’s document, “The Family: A Proclamation to the World” teaches that fathers are to preside over, responsible to provide the necessities for and are responsible to protect, their families. He added, however, that the husband is not alone in this action; that his wife is an equal partner in the decision-making.

After concluding the long meeting, the company’s representative told Elder Maynes and his father that their company's proposal bid would cost his company drastically less money than all the other companies' bids. The representative told Elder Maynes and his father to instead up their bid to be just lower than that of the next lowest company, so that the two men could split the excess money and “everyone would win.” Elder Maynes said his father told the representative that he would think it over and left. In the car following the meeting, Elder Maynes said his father questioned the decision, asking: “Well, what do you think we should do?” Before Elder Maynes could answer, his father said the bribe was not worth it. “Once you take a bribe or compromise your integrity, it is very difficult to ever get it back,” his father told him. “Don’t ever do it. Not even once.” Elder Maynes said that “through the integrity of our hearts” husbands and fathers can “earn the trust of the Lord as well as the trust of our wives and children.” “As we understand and apply the sacred principle of trust built on integrity, we will be true to our sacred covenants,” he concluded. “We will also succeed in our presiding in our families with love and righteousness, providing necessities of life and protecting our families from the evils of the world.” — Josh Furlong

Elder Evans: Developing a testimony

Elder David F. Evans of the Quorum of the Seventy spoke about searching for the truth and developing a conviction of the truth of the LDS Church and its doctrines, even when answers don’t come as quickly as hoped. Elder Evans’ mother would help him when he had questions about the LDS Church and its doctrines when he was younger. She advised him to “do the things you know you should, and don’t do the things you know you shouldn’t,” while searching for answers.

And if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you.” People should read the Book of Mormon and do whatever else is necessary to receive a testimony, or strong conviction, of the truthfulness and inspired nature of it, Elder Evans said. When Elder Evans was serving his mission, he decided to read the Book of Mormon, and felt it was true after reading and praying. Each person has a personal responsibility to obtain a testimony and to keep covenants while doing what is necessary to obtain answers, he said.

Elder Renlund: Rockets and the priesthood

When a rocket is launched out of the Earth’s atmosphere, it carries a payload, like a satellite, with it. The rocket does no good when it’s sitting in a factory on the ground. Instead, the payload must be carried by the rocket out of the atmosphere to do what it is meant to do.

Renlund of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles compared the rocket and the payload to the priesthood and the atoning power of Jesus Christ. The priesthood, like the rocket, enables the atoning power of Jesus Christ to influence others. “God’s atoning power is made accessible through the priesthood, which delivers the payload,” Elder Renlund said. However, just as a rocket may experience material fatigue, the priesthood of a man can be affected by a different kind of material fatigue when he does not keep his covenants with God. The purpose of the priesthood is to invite others to come unto Christ, he said, but being able to do so requires keeping certain promises.

President Nelson - The Book of Mormon: A life-changing experience

President Russell M. Nelson, president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, talked about the importance of reading the Book of Mormon and its impact on the lives of those who read it, embodied its teachings and made it a valuable possession. President Nelson started off his talk by relating a story of when he was on assignment for the church in Ghana. On this trip, he had the privilege of meeting an African tribal king. The king said he was a “student of the Bible,” but wanted to know more about what President Nelson had been talking about. “What can you teach me about Jesus Christ?” the king asked. The two went on to read in the Book of Mormon about when Jesus Christ visited the North American continent, and visited the people there. Following their discussion, President Nelson said the king turned to him and said: “You could have given me diamonds or rubies but nothing is more precious to me than this additional knowledge about the Lord Jesus Christ.” Following the story, President Nelson asked those in attendance: “How precious is the Book of Mormon to you? If you were offered diamonds or rubies or the Book of Mormon, which would you choose?” President Nelson recalled that current church president President Thomas S. Monson recently challenged church members to read the Book of Mormon. “Something powerful happens when a child of God seeks to know more about Him and His beloved son,” President Nelson said. “Nowhere are those truths taught more clearly and powerfully than in the Book of Mormon.” He offered three questions for those in attendance to ask themselves when considering the Book of Mormon: What would your life be like without the Book of Mormon? What would you not know? What would you not have? “Immersing ourselves regularly in the truths of the Book of Mormon can be a life-changing experience,” he urged. “The Book of Mormon is truly the word of God. It contains the answers to life’s most compelling questions,” he continued. “It teaches the doctrine of Christ. It expands and clarifies many of the plain and precious truths that were lost through centuries of time and numerous translations of the Bible. The Book of Mormon provides the fullest and most authoritative understanding of the Atonement of Jesus Christ to be found anywhere. It teaches what it really means to be born again.”

Elder Haleck teaches about the need to give all

Elder O. Vincent Haleck of the Seventy has served in the Pacific region for many years, and said the saints there inspire him with their faith, love and sacrifices. Elder Haleck then said they have “much in common” with the widow in the Bible who cast her two mites into the treasury. The Savior taught that while other wealthy people threw in larger amounts of money, the poor widow gave more in spirit.

— LDSGeneralConference (@ldsconf) September 30, 2017 Elder Haleck shared three experiences from his time serving among Church members in the Pacific, where they showed they had the same hearts as the widow. The first story he told was of an older couple who accepted an invitation to pray to see if the things they had learned from the missionaries were true. Their prayer was answered “in the form of a sweet, but ringing affirmation.” They chose to be baptized, but their decision came at a high price, Elder Haleck said. They lost jobs, social standing, important friendships and the love and support of their families. But still, they faithfully walked to church every Sunday and served in callings. When asked if this was all worth it, the brother gave “a simple but unwavering reply: ‘It is true, isn’t it? Our choice was clear.’” They, like the widow, cast in their all, Elder Haleck said, and their burdens were made light because of their faith. The second experience involved Elder Haleck speaking with village elders in Samoa about allowing missionaries to preach in new areas on the island. One area in particular had always been closed to missionary work, but suddenly a village chief allowed it to be open. Elder Haleck asked the village chief why, and received this response:

The third story he related was when the members of the church first learned there would be a temple in American Samoa. The closest temples at the time were far away and travel costs were high. The local members were asked to donate to a building fund. When Elder Haleck and other local leaders went through the donations, they “felt an abiding sense of awe,” knowing that these families gave most of what they had to help get a temple near their homes. He encouraged others to give their all like the widow.

Elder Rasband says God does not operate through coincidences

Alma, a prophet from the Book of Mormon, had tried to preach the gospel to the people of Ammonihah, but decided to leave because none of the people in the city were listening. As he left, an angel visited Alma and told him to go back. When he returned, he met a man named Amulek and asked him for something to eat. Amulek told Alma he knew who he was, that an angel had told him that Alma would find him. Amulek would eventually become Alma’s missionary companion and help him teach the people of Ammonihah successfully. Was that a coincidence, Elder Ronald A. Rasband of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles asked conferencegoers. No, he answered. God had orchestrated that meeting between Alma and Amulek. It is in this same way that God orchestrates circumstances in others' lives as well, he said.

He does not do things by coincidence, but by divine design,” he said. Elder Rasband told the story of two of his grandchildren, a granddaughter, who was on a trip visiting church historical sites, and her brother, who was on a mission for the church in the same area. Elder Rasband’s granddaughter did not expect to see her brother, but spotted two missionaries walking down the road while her group’s bus drove down the street. One of the missionaries was her brother. The group asked the driver to pull over and Elder Rasband’s granddaughter was able to say hello to her brother, who was only on the street for a moment, walking to his car.

It is my favorite day of the year,” one said. Building off the summer example, Elder Cook added that life on earth is “a very short time” and as “fleeting as a British summer.”

Unfortunately, he continued, humility — which is essential — is seldom evident in the world as most look to claim superiority or to take pride in their individual talents, wishes and desires. Elder Cook pointed to the life of Jesus Christ as a perfect example of humility and as the “most profound event in history.” Elder Cook cautioned members of the church to avoid pride and to be more humble in all facets of their lives, including service in the church. He said many see humility as a weakness, and a way to not celebrate individual authenticity. “We can celebrate our individual uniqueness as children of God without using authenticity as an excuse for an un-Christlike behavior.” In the quest toward humility, Elder Cook said, individuals need to avoid the “humble brag,” which he defined as “an ostensibly modest or self-deprecating statement or picture whose actual purpose is to draw attention to something of which one is proud.” “Humility isn’t some grand identifiable achievement or even overcoming some major challenge. It is a sign of spiritual strength. It is having the quiet confidence that day by day and hour by hour we can rely on the Lord, serve Him and achieve His purposes.” He concluded his remarks by encouraging those in attendance to strive to be more humble every day. “The test of greatness is the way one meets the eternal every day.”

'Repentance is always positive,' Brother Owen teaches

Brother Stephen W. Owen, Young Men general president, spoke about repentance and said that everyone has sinned. There may be undefeated seasons in sports, but there aren’t any in life. Fortunately, Brother Owen said, through Jesus' sacrifice, known as the Atonement, all were given the gift of repentance. Most people think of repenting as something miserable and depressing, but they are looking at it the wrong way, he added.

In a “pivotal moment” in the story, he realized he wasted his life and his father’s inheritance, Brother Owen said, adding that the walk back home was probably very long. Brother Owen wondered if there were there times he hesitated, or headed back to his old life. Regardless, the prodigal son had the faith to return to his father, who was watching and waiting with open arms. Each person is a prodigal, Brother Owen said. "We all have to 'come to ourselves' — usually more than once — and choose the path that leads back home," he said. "It’s a choice we make daily, throughout our lives." He said the journey might seem long but it can be "a joyous journey if we pursue it with faith in Jesus Christ and hope in His Atonement."

It’s not enough to gain a testimony, or firm conviction in the teachings of the LDS Church, in order to stay on the path back to Heavenly Father. Elder Stevenson talks about 'a spiritual eclipse'

Earlier this year, much of North America witnessed a total solar eclipse as the moon covered the sun for a few minutes. While the moon is much smaller and less powerful than the bright sun, its close distance to the earth allowed it to block out the rays of the sun for a moment. Elder Gary E. Stevenson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles compared the solar eclipse to a spiritual eclipse that many may experience if they draw something so close to them that it blocks out the rays of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Sometimes these things may be good, he said, but if those things become more important in one’s life than the gospel, they can cause what he called a spiritual eclipse.

Many compare their lives to the lives others portray online, which often does not show whole picture, he said.

Become perfect through heaven's help, Elder Holland counsels

Elder Jeffrey R. Holland of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, began his address by recognizing that while the scriptures and God’s commandments bless lives, some passages can make people feel as if they fall short. For example, a New Testament reference says in part, “be ye therefore perfect.” While not diminishing the commandments of God, Elder Holland encouraged listeners to not turn goals into excuses for self-loathing.

He expressed gratitude for God and his son Jesus Christ, who are perfect. One purpose of the scriptures is to inspire people to be more like deity, he suggested. The only hope for true perfection is receiving it as a gift from heaven. It cannot be earned, he said. He encouraged people to be a little more godlike in small things and remember they are not hypocrites, but human, if they are not perfect in their quest to be more like God. He quoted Leo Tolstoy to show that people should not criticize those who are imperfect in trying to follow God.

Elder Christofferson teaches about Jesus Christ, the 'bread of life'

Elder D. Todd Christofferson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles spoke on the symbolism of Jesus Christ in the New Testament as the “bread of life,” tying the illustration into church member’s weekly communion referred to as the sacrament. Many at the time Jesus lived didn’t understand the symbolism, and such confusion remains today, he said. “To eat his flesh and drink his blood is a striking way of expressing how completely we must bring the Savior into our life, into our very being, that we may be one,” Elder Christofferson said.

Eating the bread and drinking the water should not be done haphazardly. “Figuratively eating his flesh and drinking his blood has a further meaning: That is to internalize the qualities and character of Christ,” he said, before adding, “As we partake of the sacramental bread and water each week, we would do well to consider how fully and completely we must incorporate his character and the pattern of his sinless life into our life and being.” The ceremonial nature of the church’s sacramental service offers a tangible benefit as members of the church strive to be better and to be more like Christ, Elder Christofferson said. “Partaking of the Savior’s flesh and blood means to put out anything not of his character, and to make his life as our own,” he said. “God will show us our flaws and failings, but he will also help us turn weakness into strength. If we sincerely ask ‘What lack I yet?’ he will not leave us to guess.”

God has a plan for you, Elder Pingree says

Elder John C. Pingree, Jr. of the Quorum of the Seventy asked:

His classmate introduced him to the LDS Church, and he was later baptized. This man went to BYU for graduate school, married and settled in the Salt Lake Valley. Years, later, when Nepali refugees came to Utah, he felt inspired to serve as an interpreter, teacher and friend. Some refugees joined the LDS Church, and he eventually became leader over the Nepali regional congregation. This man also helped translate the Book of Mormon to Nepali. Elder Pingree used this example to show that God has an important work for everyone. Some may question how they can be useful, but he said people are agents who further God's work, and that God placed power “in us to bring to pass much righteousness.” Elder Pingree spoke of former church President Spencer W. Kimball, who once spoke of the LDS doctrine that says each person lived with God before they were born. President Kimball taught that before each person came to earth, they were given certain, specific assignments to help others while on earth. While some may find their duties to be impossible, through God, they can accomplish these things, he said. Elder Pingree listed four principles to help individuals accomplish their heavenly assignments: 1. Focus on others 2. Discover and develop spiritual gifts 3. Make use of adversity

Elder Oaks talks about the importance of families

“Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are blessed with unique doctrine and different ways of viewing the world,” said Elder Dallin H. Oaks of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, as he began his talk. He referenced scriptural cautions from the Bible and the Book of Mormon that encourage people to not be conformed to “the wisdom of the world.” He pointed out that God’s desire for his children is exaltation. He spoke of how the LDS doctrines of salvation and exaltation differ, in that salvation refers to the individual being saved and exaltation involves entire families being able to become like God.

Serve others, even in small ways, Sister Oscarson counsels

Sister Bonnie L. Oscarson, Young Women general president, drew attention to the church’s recent humanitarian response to those affected by hurricanes, particularly in Houston, Texas, and Jacksonville, Florida. Quoting writings from the New Testament about service, Sister Oscarson also reminded church members of counsel provided by President Thomas S. Monson, who did not attend the conference for health-related reasons. “Unless we lose ourself in service to others, there is little purpose in our own lives,” President Monson once said. While volunteering for service in large projects, such as the response to Hurricane Irma in Florida, is good, Sister Oscarson added that some of the greatest opportunities church members will find to serve will come in their own neighborhoods and communities.

President Uchtdorf opens Saturday morning session, urges members to follow Christ

President Dieter F. Uchtdorf, second counselor in the First Presidency, gave the first talk of the Saturday morning session by saying that he recently met with LDS Church President Thomas S. Monson, who expressed his gratitude for the love and prayers being offered for him. President Uchtdorf told the story of “Bobby the Wonder Dog” who went on vacation with his family from Oregon to Indiana, about 2,000 miles away. Unfortunately, Bobby got lost and the family had to return home, despite countless days and hours frantically searching for him. Six months later, the family was stunned to find a mangy, scrawny Bobby on their front doorstep — he had walked the entire distance himself. President Uchtdorf noted that Bobby is not the only dog or animal that has baffled scientists with “their amazing sense of direction and instinct for home.” He also mentioned Monarch butterflies that migrate 3,000 miles each year, turtles that swim from Indonesia to California, and humpback whales that swim from the Arctic to the equator and back. “I can’t help but wonder — is it possible that human beings have similar yearnings and inner guidance that draws them to their heavenly home?” he asked.

President Uchtdorf began the session’s concluding message with a fictional story about three sisters. The first sister was constantly sad because she didn’t feel pretty or socially competent. The second sister was always mad. There was always someone out to get her or someone who performed better than she did. The third sister, however, was glad. She was not smarter or more beautiful than her sisters, but she didn’t worry about what others said about her, he said.

Sister Joy D. Jones, Primary general president

Sister Jones talked about a woman’s “divine worth,” or the value of her life in the sight of God. She shared examples from two converts to the LDS Church who said they previously didn’t feel “very special” or loved. But after learning about the church and its teachings, both said they felt loved as daughters of Heavenly Father, and their attitudes changed. Recounting the experience of one of the women, Sister Jones said: “She was like a moth attracted to the light. She said 'When I found the gospel, I found myself.'” Sister Jones shared an experience about a teenager from Utah who was a junior in high school when she found out she had cancer. After an 18-month bout, Taiana Brown died. Prior to her death, Taiana was asked several times “Why you?” Her response always was: “Why not me?” “Taiana understood her divine worth, knowing she was a daughter of God, who gave her peace and courage to face her overwhelming trial in the positive way she did,” Sister Jones said. Sister Jones compared the words worth and worthiness, saying the two are not the same. “Spiritual worth means to value ourselves the way Heavenly Father values us and not as the world values us. Our value was determined before we ever came to the earth,” she said. “Worthiness is achieved through obedience. If we sin, we are less worthy, but we are never worth less.”

While it is often easier to be spiritually passive than it is to put forth the spiritual effort to remember and embrace our divine identity, we cannot afford that indulgence in these latter days.”

Sister Marriott spoke of the importance of learning to love and serve in the same ways as God and his son Jesus Christ. “We need to continually deepen our knowledge of and obedience to our Heavenly Father,” she said.

When followers of Christ come upon challenges in their life, they can either choose to let the challenges be distractions, or let the trials drive them to their knees to ask God for help in prayer. Sister Marriott recounted a struggle she had with a relative who disagreed with her over political issues. Her relative picked apart her arguments and Sister Marriott felt humiliated and uninformed. She prayed to God and complained about her relative, but soon felt the need to love her instead.

Sister Sharon L. Eubank, first counselor in the Relief Society general presidency

In 1979, Camilla Kimball, wife of then-President Spencer W. Kimball, delivered a message her ill husband had prepared for the second global meeting of the church's women. Sister Eubank shared a portion of what she said was an "electrifying charge" from the church president, for the women of the LDS Church. Speaking of the future progress of the church, he said, "Much of the major growth that is coming to the Church in the last days will come because many of the good women of the world ... will be drawn to the church in large numbers. This will happen to the degree that the women of the church reflect righteousness and articulateness in their lives and to the degree that the women of the Church are seen as distinct and different — in happy ways — from the women of the world." Using this talk as a starting point, Sister Eubank gave five challenges to women: Be righteous She encouraged LDS women and girls to develop relationships with women of other faiths. Be humble, she said, and have integrity. She also said those who make mistakes can change and repent. "Women who have repented have changed the course of history," she said.

General women's session begins

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints begins its semiannual general conference with the women's session. The session is for girls and women ages 8 and older. Various leaders from the LDS Church will give "guidance and encouragement" to the women and girls of the church. In the session's opening narration, a woman said church leader President Thomas S. Monson will view the session from home. To watch the women's session, click here.
