SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A grass fire burned close to homes in the Avenues neighborhood near downtown Wednesday.
The fire started near 11th avenue and B Street near City Creek Canyon and jumped a road, Bonneville Avenue, threatening homes and condominiums, said Dennis McKone, Salt Lake County Fire spokesman.
Bonneville Avenue is a one-way road from the Avenues neighborhood to the State Capitol, which is on the other side of the canyon. One side of the road is reserved for public recreation and is a popular place for biking, walking and jogging.
Erratic winds made fighting the fire difficult, but it was contained quickly, McKone said.
A change in the weather could affect that.
"We're waiting to see what the weather is going to do," he said.
