Coco Warner Reporting This week we're introducing you to some Utah volunteers and to some organizations that really depend on those volunteers. It's part of our new High-Five segment.
The American Cancer Society is one organization that helps Utahns in the fight against cancer. The American Cancer Society's building is located on 33rd South at about 9th East.
Basically, its purpose is to help people affected by cancer better cope with the disease. One of the programs that aims to do that is called "Look Good, Feel Better".
The difference is in the details: A brush of the brow, a little concealer under the eye. A group of women are participating in the "Look Good, Feel Better" program. It's a national course sponsored by the American Cancer Society.
Locally, Susanne Woodcox is the organizer. She brings cancer patients and cosmetologists together.
The effects of a brain tumor 10 years ago resulted in her partial paralysis. But that doesn't matter here.
Susanne Woodcox/American Cancer Society: "But by the end of the class, when we put make-up on them, they get their wigs on, they just brighten up. They're happy as they go out. That's rewarding for me."
Before Susanne's brain tumor, she was a cosmetologist. So this volunteer effort allows her to do her job again.
Susanne Woodcox/American Cancer Society: "It's not as much about makeup, even though that's what we do here. But it's just to get them with other people and be involved with other people that make them feel like they're not alone."
This program hopes by helping people with the outside, they'll feel better about what's inside. That's not to mention the influence it has on the volunteers like Susanne.
Susanne Woodcox/American Cancer Society: "Whenever you serve somebody else, you really begin to love them and love the program."
This is just one of many programs at the American Cancer Society. They also offer things like transportation, one-on-one counseling, and support groups.
