HURRICANE, Washington County — A Hurricane Police Department employee has been charged with selling items collected as evidence on eBay, according to court documents.
Kurt B. Tanner, 44, of St. George, was charged Monday in 5th District Court with misuse of public money, a third-degree felony.
Charging documents say Tanner, an evidence technician with the police department, was taking property obtained by officers as evidence and giving it "to a company that was owned by his daughter to be sold on eBay. The majority of the proceeds from the sales of this property went to the company and was not returned to the public."
There was no information Thursday about whether charges were pending against the daughter.
The taking of property could date back to at least September 2016, court records state. Tanner's activities were discovered through an audit that began in the spring.
It was not revealed Thursday how many or what types of items were missing, or whether the missing evidence affected any cases.
Tanner is a civilian employee with the police department, not a certified law enforcer. He has been working there full time for the past two years and had been there 10 years overall, according to the department.
Tanner has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the case.
