SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah leaders are approving money to buy the last of three buildings for new homeless shelters expected to replace an overcrowded Salt Lake City shelter hit by violence.
A state panel on homelessness signed off Tuesday on $4.5 million to buy a building from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which now operates a Deseret Industries thrift store there.
Salt Lake County Mayor Ben McAdams says it's a major step toward getting the three shelters open by June 2019. The Road Home shelter downtown would then close its doors.
State lawmakers have set aside about $20 million over the past two years to pay for two new 200-bed homeless centers in Salt Lake City and this third one in Salt Lake County that could have up to 300 beds.
