Utah Transit Authority is facing a serious budget shortfall that will likely get a lot worse.
In the first seven months of this year, UTA had a $7.5 million budget shortfall. The agency predicts it could be $14 million short by the end of the year.
"Any corner that we can cut, we're doing," said UTA Spokeswoman Carrie Bohnsack-Ware.
She says UTA has a soft hiring freeze and is cutting back on some travel and overtime.
UTA depends on sales tax revenue for operating expenses, but people are not shopping much in this economic downturn. Bohnsack-Ware says, "We are hoping that there's an upturn, but if not, we are just bracing for the worst."
