MURRAY — Police identified the victim and alleged assailant Monday in connection with a fatal shooting that took place near the Murray Desert Star Playhouse Sunday.

Carl David Johnson, 56, was taken into custody by police around 4:30 p.m. Sunday under investigation of murder after authorities responded to a report of shots fired at the Iris Apartments, 4865 S. State, according to Murray Police Sgt. Marvin Barlow.

Thomas Dunn, 58, was found with multiple injuries and was taken to an area hospital.

Johnson was drinking alcohol with his neighbors when he and Dunn engaged in a verbal argument, according to a Salt Lake County Jail report. The argument escalated and Johnson was wrestled to the ground by Dunn.

After Dunn let him up, Johnson went into the apartment building and returned a short time later with a handgun, according to a Salt Lake County Jail report. Johnson then shot Dunn and kicked him in the face several times after he fell to the ground, witnesses told police.

Dunn later died from his injuries.

Murray police officer Kenny Bass said Dunn and Johnson were acquaintances but it's still unclear how well they knew each other.

The entrance to the Iris Apartments abuts the Desert Star Playhouse. No productions were scheduled at the comedy theater and restaurant for Sunday.
