PROVO — Police have identified a 6-year-old girl killed over the weekend when she and two family members were hit by an 18-year-old suspected of driving drowsy.
Iris Arnold was standing next to a parked car with her 5-year-old cousin and their grandfather Saturday afternoon when police say the driver veered off the road near 2900 W. Center St., hitting all three of them.
Iris, who had just left a birthday party for her friend, died of her injuries at an area hospital while her cousin was rushed by helicopter to Primary Children's Hospital and her grandfather was admitted to Utah Valley Hospital, Provo police officer Joshua Jennings said.
The child and grandfather were last reported to be in critical condition. An update on their recovery is expected Monday.
Investigators say they have ruled out driving under the influence as a factor in the accident, but they say the 18-year-old may have been drowsy. The city attorney for Provo will begin reviewing the case for potential charges Monday, Jennings said.
The name of the driver has not been released. Jennings said the man has been cooperative with police since the crash.
Family members have created a GoFundMe account* to help with funeral and medical expenses, saying that between the three victims they expect the costs to be "extremely high."
