BEAVER — A 15-acre fire in Beaver Canyon has closed the highway, emptied a campground and put residents on notice.

The U.S. Forest Service is responding to the fire sparked Sunday about 9 miles up the canyon in Fishlake National Forest near the Ponderosa Picnic Area, spokeswoman Kayli Yardley said.

Named the Ponderosa Fire, the blaze is actively moving east, Yardley said. State Route 153 has been closed as firefighters work to contain the flames, and all campers have cleared out of the Little Reservoir Campground.

Residents in the Whispering Pines and Hi Lo subdivisions have been told to remain on standby in case they are asked to evacuate, Yardley said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
