SPANISH FORK — A family reunion came to a devastating end after a 6-year-old boy drowned Saturday evening.

A call came into police at about 4:25 p.m. reporting a missing child at Spanish Oaks Reservoir, according to Spanish Fork Police Sgt. Phil Nielsen. The missing boy's family had searched for him for about 15 minutes before calling police.

Police, fire, EMS personnel and Utah County Search and Rescue crews arrived at the scene and searched for 35 to 45 minutes before a bystander spotted the boy in the reservoir in an area about 5 feet deep, Nielsen said.

Paramedics transported the boy to Mountain View Hospital in Payson where he was pronounced dead.

Police said the boy, from North Dakota, was with his mother at a family reunion visiting relatives from the Spanish Fork and Springville areas.

Officials did not immediately release the boy’s name.
