NEW YORK, Aug 23, 2006 (UPI via COMTEX) -- "American Idol" finalist Constantine Maroulis is negotiating to join the cast of "The Wedding Singer" on Broadway, Playbill.com reported in New York.

Maroulis is set to join the show Sept. 8, although his specific role was not mentioned, MTV reported Wednesday.

Maroulis, who grew up in New Jersey of Greek parentage, was among the top 12 "Idol" contestants in 2005. He was voted off the show Aug. 27, Playbill.com said.

Maroulis graduated from the Boston Conservatory of Music. He appeared in independent films and off-Broadway shows, and toured with "Rent" before competing on "American Idol," he said on his Web site. He was also lead singer for the hard rock band, "Pray for the Soul of Betty."

"The Wedding Singer" is about a 1980s rock-star hopeful from New Jersey who performs at weddings until his fiancee leaves him at the altar.
