EAGLE MOUNTAIN — A man missing overnight in the Five Mile Pass area was rescued from a mine shaft Sunday.

Utah County Sgt. Rhett Williams said the man was in the area west of Eagle Mountain with friends when he set out looking for firewood on an off-highway vehicle and didn't return.

When the man didn't return to the party, friends went looking for him but found no sign of him. When the friends looked again in the morning, they found the OHV the man had been driving wedged down in a mine shaft, Williams said.

The man didn't initially respond to his friend's calls, but when he did, they realized he had fallen as far as 90 feet down the shaft, according to Williams.

The group called 911, and members of Utah County search and rescue, and Unified Fire Authority responded. Once the man was located, rescuers secured the ATV and sent a team down to retrieve the man, Williams said.

"We were able to get him out of the mine. He's got some head injuries, nothing major that we know of, but he was airlifted out of there," he said.

No further information about the man or his condition was immediately available.
