THE LIVING ROOM — Most people have at least one movie that they know is not very good, but for one reason or another, they just love it.
Guilty pleasure movies are typically the ones that you deny ever seeing to your friends and are embarrassed to admit you own. They are the DVDs you hide when company comes over or say you received as a white elephant gift.
For some, a guilty pleasure movie might be some horribly made movie from your childhood that brings some pleasant memories. Maybe you are into action movies, but there is that one romantic comedy that your significant other made you watch that you secretly loved. For one reason or another, it is a movie that you find yourself watching again and again over the years, but you never want to admit to anyone that you've seen it.
For this month’s KSL Popcorn Movie Club, we put our egos and pride aside to divulge our favorite guilty pleasure movies.
We’ll be chatting about each pick in more detail on the KSL Popcorn Report podcast throughout the month of April. We'd love for you to rewatch the movies (or watch them for the first time) and give us your feedback on each movie, either in the comments or by tweeting us, @KSLPopReport.
Faith’s pick: “She’s the Man”
"I know, I know, this is a total teeny-bopper chick flick. But I can’t help it — I love it. This is probably Amanda Bynes’ only semi-decent movie, and even then, it’s pretty cheesy. But even 11 years after its release, “She’s the Man” still makes me laugh with its one-liners and Bynes’ facial expressions.
"In case you have never even heard of this movie, which is very possible if you didn’t happen to be a teen girl in 2006, 'She’s the Man' tells the story of a girl who just wants to play soccer, and so when her school cuts the girl’s soccer team, she decides to disguise herself as her twin brother and play for the rival high school’s boys team.
"The movie is actually based on Shakespeare's 'Twelfth Night' and is apparently a remake of the 1985 film 'Just One of the Guys.' In true Shakespearean fashion, there are a lot of love triangles, but it’s fun to watch it all work itself out; plus, you get to see a young Channing Tatum in one of his first movies."
David’s pick: "Mystery Men"
"This film was released a long time ago, right before the turn of the century (1999), but was far ahead of its time for its genre. As a precursor to the modern day superhero movie, 'Mystery Men' gives us a look at all the hard work it takes to make your name as a superhero — from a blue collar everyman perspective.
This movie also includes a great cast with Ben Stiller, Greg Kinnear, Paul Reubens, William H. Macy and Geoffrey Rush to name only a few. ‘Mystery Men’ is hilarious and a bit absurd with just a touch of dark humor."
John’s pick: "The Cable Guy"
"A lot of people hate this movie, and I just don't care. I have seen 'The Cable Guy' a thousand times and I'll see it a thousand more.
"Jim Carrey is hilarious, Matthew Broderick is spot on and the direction from Ben Stiller is dark and just off-center. This movie is insanely quotable, and I swear I repeat a line from it on nearly a daily basis.
"If you saw this when it first came out and hated it, give it another shot because this movie is a riot. There is a reason it's part of my home collection because I'll never grow tired of it."
Curt’s pick: "Mean Girls"
"I will admit I have quite a few guilty pleasure movies. If it makes me laugh and entertains me, I just can’t help but love it. I was going to try and look cool and pick one of my all-time favorite movies, “Point Break,” but it has such a loyal following and everyone knows my love for it, so it is not all that guilty for me. “Mean Girls,” however, is a film I don’t broadcast to the world that I like.
"I know I was probably not the demographic this movie was going for when it was released. I saw it with a buddy in a tiny town in Nebraska on a cross-country trip while we waited for our car to get fixed. It was the only movie playing at the time, and now I am very glad it was. We found ourselves laughing throughout the entire movie.
"I think it was the funny take on cliques you see in high school or maybe it was the hilarious Tim Meadows as the principal, but it just seems to deliver laugh after laugh. Every time it is on cable, I find myself stopping to watch it when no one is around."
