(KSL News) Five Tepanyaki Japanese Steakhouse Restaurants in Utah have been forced to pay $200,000 in back wages.
The U.S. Department of Labor says restaurants in Salt Lake City, Provo, West Jordan, Lehi and Clearfield didn't pay overtime to employees who worked more than 40 hours a week.
The restaurants also violated laws for employees who receive tips. Employees must make minimum wage of $6.55 an hour and time-and-a-half for overtime. Tipped employees must make $2.13 an hour, but if tips don't bring them up to the minimum wage, the employer must make up the difference.
