MIDVALE — A shooting in Midvale ended with four arrested and one woman sent to the hospital with minor injuries Sunday.

About 2:15 a.m., a Unified police officer at the Midvale precinct heard a shot fired next door at the Calaveras Apartments, 7940 S. Main, followed by a 20-second pause and then several more shots, said Unified Police Lt. Brian Lohrke. Officers surrounded the building and approached the suspected apartment.

Lohrke said the occupants of the apartment “complied with commands and exited the apartment.”

Lohrke said officers believe there was a party in the apartment and at some point shots were fired. “One bullet traveled through a wall” into another apartment, Lohrke said, and a 31-year-old woman was struck in “the tip of her finger, just missing her head,” as she slept. The woman was asleep on the couch at the time.

The woman was transported to Intermountain Medical Center for treatment in “fair condition,” according to Lohrke. Police have not released the woman's name. One adult and two children were in the apartment with the woman at the time of the shooting and received no injuries

Four people were taken into custody, including two adults, Fernando Zavala , 23, Giovanni Zavala, 20 and one juvenile male, 17, and one juvenile female, 17.

Giovanni Zavala was arrested for investigation of felony discharge of a firearm, aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, obstruction of justice and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to jail records.

The two 17-year-olds were also booked into Salt Lake Juvenile Detention.

Two of the suspects are known gang members, according to Lorhkre, but police did not state which ones.

Search warrants were served on the apartment Sunday. Shell casings and drug paraphernalia were found in the rooms, the report states. Lohrke said it was unknown whether the shots came from one gun or if there was an exchange of gunfire.

Lohrke said the four arrested “are not cooperating with police” and that a weapon has not been recovered. Detectives are still investigating the incident.

Detectives were also looking into the possibility that one of the suspects attempted to shoot someone who fled from the apartment.
