OREM, Utah (AP) -- Orem may ease up on requirements to keep lawns grassy and green.
City officials are considering tweaking an ordinance to allow more leeway for landscaping items that don't require as much water as grass.
Stan Sainsbury, the city's development services director, says one proposal would allow 30 percent of landscaping to be rocks, bark, mulch, benches and other drought-resistant items.
The move is partially motivated by a highly publicized "lousy lawn" case in 2007 in which a a 70-year-old woman was handcuffed and put in jail for not watering her property and resisting arrest after an officer tried to ticket her.
The City Council is scheduled to discuss the changes again Oct. 28.
