(KSL News) The Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office is trying to rally taxpayer support for the Oxbow jail.

Salt Lake County opens mothballed jail for tours

Part of that plan is to get residents inside the jail to see it. Today the sheriff's office gave tours to the public.

County officials have agreed to spend $640,000 sprucing up the place, but Sheriff Jim Winder says the commitment falls millions of dollars short of the money needed to operate it.

So today visitors came in to take a look around.

Raylynn Malcolm said, "The cops are there to stop people that don't make right choices. If you continue to make right choices throughout your life, you won't every end up in a place like this. But making wrong choices will land you somewhere you don't want to be, definitely."

The jail is scheduled to open early next year.
