PAWTUCKET, R.I. -- It's been a whirlwind year of baseball for former University of Utah shortstop Ryan Khoury.
Following an All-America and MWC Player of the Year season this past spring, Khoury was drafted in the 12th round by the Boston Red Sox. He started his professional career like most Red Sox signees, being sent to short-season Lowell, Mass. to play for the Spinners.
But when Triple-A Pawtucket needed a middle infielder to serve as a backup, the Red Sox promoted Khoury all the way to Triple-A on August 3.
As could be expected, he's struggled a bit at the plate, hitting .143 with two RBIs in nine games and 21 at bats. But he hasn't looked completely overmatched, according to Pawtucket manager Ron Johnson.
"He's done a really nice job here," Ron Johnson told the Providence Journal. "I've been really pleased. This is a tremendous asset for him as he begins his developmental path. The way this organization is, it's not afraid to take guys to Boston and it's the same thing here. It pays dividends and he's holding his own."
At Lowell, Khoury, was batting .246 with five doubles, a triple and 15 RBIs in 32 games. He batted .438 for the Utes this past spring, leading the Mountain West Conference in batting and ranking third in the nation.
