SALT LAKE CITY — With as much talent as exists in Utah high school athletics, every season features its own cadre of impressive results.
But 2016 saw many of the Beehive State’s best perform on a national stage.
Here are some of the top moments from a whirlwind year.
Davis girls soccer wins third-straight state title
Led by future BYU teammates Mikayla Colohan and Olivia Wade, Davis capped off its second-straight undefeated season with a 2-1 win over Fremont at Rio Tinto Stadium last fall. The Darts, who have not lost since Oct. 10, 2014, also set a state record for consecutive wins and finished atop USA Today’s Super 25 rankings for the second-straight season.
Lone Peak’s Frank Jackson finishes standout high school hoops career
A career like the one had by the current Duke freshman doesn’t happen often in Utah high school basketball. Jackson became the first McDonald’s All-American since Brighton’s Garner Meads in 2000 and scored a game-high 19 points in the exhibition game in Chicago to claim co-MVP honors.
Jackson was also named Utah Gatorade Player of the Year, marking the fourth time since 2011 the Knights have boasted the top player in the state by the organization.
American Fork’s Casey Clinger repeats for state, national cross-country titles
Clinger’s run to the top continued in 2016, when he successfully defended his 5A state cross-country title and then travel to Nike Cross Country Nationals to successfully defend his title in the Pacific Northwest.
Clinger also celebrated a team state title at Sugarhouse Park, and the Cavemen finished second at the prestigious national event.

Bingham’s ‘revenge tour’ completed
Bingham football rolled through the regular season, then beat Lone Peak 17-10 for its third Class 5A state championship in four years and expunged a loss to the Knights in last season’s semifinals.
Of course the ball got started earlier in the year at Bingham, when BYU-bound Yoeli Childs and the Miners’ boys hoops team won the school’s first basketball championship in a decade.
New state transfer rules for high school athletes
A late-semester rule change by the Utah State Board of Education could allow high school athletes to transfer any time without penalty, as long as they have not played a varsity sport.
The rule sparked outrage among most coaches, whose programs voted overwhelmingly 129-9 against it. Watch our roundtable discussion on the new agenda item here.
East’s Jaylen Warren blazes to state record rushing total
The KSL Player of the Year had a season that has never been done in Utah high school football history, with 3,099 rushing yards and 38 touchdowns, and the Leopards may have begun a dynasty with their first back-to-back football championships since 1956 and a national ranking.
Not bad for a player whose only scholarship offer is from Snow College.
Syracuse’s Hunter Woodhall wins 2 Paralympic medals
The legend of Syracuse sprinter Hunter Woodhall, a double-amputee from his youth, continues to grow with a silver and a bronze medal in the T-44 200-meter and 400-meter events at the Rio Paralympics in August.
Jordan’s Spencer Curtis assaults UHSAA record book
The Beetdigger wide receiver set records for career receptions, receiving yards and touchdowns this season. And he did it all six months after suffering a major knee injury.
Pleasant Grove’s Payton Henry signs with Brewers
The Vikings slugger and Deseret News Mr. Baseball already had a scholarship offer to attend BYU. But when Milwaukee selected him in the sixth round of last spring’s MLB draft, he couldn’t say no to the projected signing bonus of at least $300,800 and a contract that included four years’ worth of tuition at the college of his choice following his career.
Maple Mountain’s LaMont, Pleasant Grove’s Anderson win 4-straight wrestling titles
Four-time state wrestling champions don’t come along every year. But in 2016, the state of Utah saw two in Pleasant Grove’s Ben Anderson and Maple Mountain’s Taylor LaMont.
Anderson led the Vikings to a fourth-straight 5A team title, while LaMont (who is currently a freshman at Utah Valley) and the Golden Eagles finished second to Wasatch in 4A.
