SALT LAKE CITY — Two people were injured, one seriously, when scaffolding set up at The Gateway shopping center fell over Thursday.
The incident happened just before 10 a.m. in an area where construction crews were working near 49 N. Rio Grande. Three people were on the scaffolding working on remodeling a three-story building at the mall, said Salt Lake Police Sgt. Brandon Shearer. The building is vacant.
Investigators believe wind may have blown the scaffolding over. As it was falling, one worker was able to safely climb onto the roof, Shearer said. Another suffered minor injuries getting to a 2-foot lip that wrapped around the second floor, he said.
The third worker fell all the way to the ground, suffering serious injuries.
Four vehicles parked below the scaffolding were also hit and sustained several thousand dollars in damage, Shearer said.
Representatives from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration were on scene to investigate the incident.
