CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — The San Francisco Symphony says it has canceled two scheduled appearances next spring at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill because of a state law limiting LGBT protections.
Executive Director Brent Assink said officials had hoped the state legislation called House Bill 2 would be overturned, but because it wasn't — and owing to travel deadlines — the symphony has canceled concerts scheduled for April 5 and 6 at UNC's Memorial Hall.
The North Carolina law requires transgender people to use restrooms in schools and state government buildings corresponding to the sex on their birth certificate.
The NCAA and Atlantic Coast Conference moved their championships out of North Carolina, and the National Basketball Association moved its 2017 All-Star game out of Charlotte because of the legislation.
