WEST VALLEY CITY — A man charged on Monday with shooting at his wife has now been charged with shooting his friend in the back, killing him in a separate shooting.

Christopher James Bonds, 26, of West Valley City, was charged Thursday in 3rd District Court with murder, a first-degree felony; discharge of a firearm causing serious bodily injury, a first-degree felony; possession of a firearm by a restricted person, a second-degree felony; and three counts of discharge of a firearm, a third-degree felony.

About 1:50 a.m. on Nov. 20, police were called to 1800 W. Parkway Blvd. where they found Byron Williams, 26, lying in the parking lot with a gunshot wound. He was taken to a local hospital where he died a short time later from his injuries.

A West Valley City man was booked into jail in relation to a shooting that left a 25-year-old man dead, police said.

Bonds told police that he and Williams had been arguing and then began struggling over Bonds' gun, according to charging documents. The gun fired once into the ground as the struggle ensued and then dropped to the ground.

Bonds picked up the gun, racked the slide and fired three shots at Williams, who was by now running away from him, according to charging documents. The shots were fired when Williams was about 10 feet away, police said. A medical examiner determined that Williams was shot in the upper back.

Police said Bonds and Williams were friends at one point.

On Monday, Bonds was charged with two counts of aggravated assault, three counts of commission of domestic violence in the presence of a child and two counts of felony discharge of a firearm, all third-degree felonies, for an incident on Nov. 5.

His wife told police that she fled her house after being assaulted by Bonds, prompting him to fire a round at her, the charges state.
