Thousands of Utahns are getting telephone calls and messages about some tight political races. Republicans say it's push polling and say the Democrats are leaving negative messages about candidates. In push polling, people hear messages that can be unpleasant and sometimes untrue about a candidate.
But Democrats say they are doing "persuasive voter identity polling" to see who could be persuaded to vote for a candidate or who has already made up their minds.
Several thousand Sandy residents say they are getting calls from both sides of the race between House Speaker Greg Curtis and Democrat Jay Seegmiller. Curtis won by only 20 votes last time.
Speaker Curtis says he won't be running again. He tells The Deseret News that if he gets re-elected this November, that's it. He'll leave office in 2010. But it appears he's angling for something else, dropping hints that another political run is possible for a higher office.
He has more than enough money in his campaign coffers to do that.
