SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A new state report shows Utah's abortion rate rose slightly in 2015 to end a four-year downward trend that left the number near historic lows that reflect a nationwide decline. There were 4.6 abortions performed last year for every 1,000 women ages 15 to 44, marking an increase from 2014's rate of 4.3 abortions per 1,000 women. The rate had hovered around 6 per 1,000 women for about 20 years until the downturn. .
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Officials say Utah's state-owned liquor stores set a new sales record ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday. The Utah Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control said Friday that revenues hit nearly $3.4 million the day before Thanksgiving, which is traditionally the biggest sales day of the year.
HELPER, Utah (AP) — An old coal plant in Carbon County is being demolished this week. The Salt Lake Tribune reports that the metal from the Carbon Power Plant near the town of Helper, Utah will be recycled. The 62-year-old plan used to be a key cog in PacifiCorp's electrical-generating fleet until he was retired last year because it cost too much to bring it into compliance with mercury emission rules.
PAYSON, Utah (AP) — The small city of Payson finally has curbside recycling after years of requests from residents. The Daily Herald in Provo reports that the service will start next month. Payson City Manager David Tuckett says requests have been coming in for at least five years and increased after large recycling bins were removed from Payson schools.
