BALTIMORE (AP) — A former Baltimore police officer has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for shooting an unarmed man nearly two years ago.
Forty-seven-year-old Wesley Cagle was sentenced Friday in Baltimore Circuit Court. He was convicted in August of assault and a weapons charge.
Prosecutors say that on Dec. 28, 2014, Cagle and three other officers encountered 47-year-old Michael Johansen running from a building. Authorities say Johansen reached down after being ordered to show his hands, and two officers shot him. Prosecutors say that as Johansen was lying in the building's doorway, Cagle approached him and shot him once in the groin.
Johansen survived and testified against Cagle. Both Johansen and Cagle are white.
The police department said in a statement Friday that Cagle no longer works for the department.
